Angel Olsen announces her return to the road with upcoming U.S. fall tour, her first since 2017
While there’s been no indication of new music in the works, according to a press release Angel hopes to introduce a “brand new live show.”
Fiercely adorable indie artist Angel Olsen recently announced that she’ll be leading a lengthy North American tour this fall and into late winter – her first cross country run since 2017. She’s also announced she’ll be touring alongside lo-fi songwriter/producer, Vagabond, who’s joining Angel as an opener.
Initially an acoustic solo act before transitioning into the orchestral indie rock we know today, this singer/songwriter has built a repertoire that’s full of vintage, 50s-esq, cathartic indie tunes. It’s a style that has come to be defined by her vocal’s semi-classical style, and has been made unique by her soulful, sultry, and often sedated way of crooning. But after her early years of intimate live scenes and wooden stool performances, 26-year-old Angel – in fear, I think, of being pigeonholed as melancholy coffee-shop folk – expanded to a three-piece, bringing drummer Josh Jaeger and bassist Stewart Bronaugh into the project.
With the release of her junior record, My Woman, the artist did a full 180 so to speak and transformed her lonely folk act into a display of dynamic indie rock. The 2016 release of “Shut Up Kiss Me” and it’s accompanying video had, at the time, thrown her in a rink that finally fit her style (literally) and played a huge part in reinventing Olsen as an artist.
“Shut Up and Kiss Me” by Angel Olsen official music video via YouTube
Flirty, fussy and charmingly temperamental, the character she plays puts on display the now dazzling, peculiar and unashamed chick that lived behind her former meeker sound. In the video, she glares, at first, just deadpan, with an almost sarcastic sense of pining, mourning some romance that went wrong. She becomes more and more crazed, tugging on her glitter wig and waiting by the phone, flinging herself around the roller rink, pouty and distraught.
Angel Olsen is the confident junior high badass, she is the hot mess who can’t keep a guy, she’s the hysterical and over-infatuated ex, but also the good girl turned bad by the wrong guy – in this music video, at least. But, in reality? Angel Olsen is, well, everything.
Her last studio album was back in 2016, My Woman, followed by a collection of miscellaneous demos, B-sides and covers released in 2017 called Phases. She hasn’t mentioned much in terms of plans for new releases, but according to a press release, this tour hopes to introduce a “brand new live show.” At this point, she’s now upgraded her set to a six-piece in order to support a sound that is no longer a stripped-down slow-jam. Once her style was paired with a more tense, garage-rock backing, this artist was able to perfect her moody, strangely-blended world of, what I’ll just call… dream-pop-vintage-indie-rock. But feel free to decide for yourself – catch her playing on tour this fall and check out some of my Angel Olsen favorites below.
